Details

Anderson PhD Completion Scholarship is funded by a bequest made by Alexander John Anderson in 1997 in memory of his Father John Anderson, Challis Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney from 1927 to 1958.

This Scholarship is to support students within the Department of Philosophy, School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry at the University of Sydney to complete their research studies.

Benefits

Successful applicants will receive the following benefits:

  • Unless otherwise stated in the Scholarship Offer Letter, the Scholarship will provide a stipend allowance equivalent to the 2020 University of Sydney Research Training Program (RTP) stipend rate per annum for 6 months, subject to satisfactory academic performance. No extension is possible
  • A successful recipient who changes their enrolment from full-time to part-time study during the Scholarship tenure must have the change approved by the Head of School. If approved, the recipient enrolled part-time scholarship will be provided with a stipend allowance equivalent to 50% of the full-time stipend rate for up 12 months, subject to satisfactory academic performance
  • The Scholarship cannot be deferred or transferred to another area of research
  • No other amount is payable
  • The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funding

Eligibility

To be eligible for Anderson PhD Completion Scholarship, applicants must:

  • be currently enrolled for full-time studies in a PhD within the Department of Philosophy, School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney
  • be undertaking research in the field of Philosophy
  • have a reasonable expectation of completion of their research degree within the next 6 months
  • not have consumed the maximum candidature for their degree as per the University of Sydney (Higher Degree by Research) Rule 2011 Policy
  • have satisfactorily completed at least 3 years of full-time PhD candidature as determined by their Postgraduate Coordinator and Supervisor evidenced in their Annual Progress Review (APR)
  • The student’s most recent APR must have been less than 1 year prior to the award
  • not have any unsatisfactory progress outcome in their APRs
  • not be a current or previous recipient of the Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship
  • not currently hold another primary stipend scholarship for the intended duration of this Scholarship

Selection Criteria

The successful applicant will be awarded Anderson PhD Completion Scholarship on the basis of:

  • Academic merit
  • Area of study and/or research proposal
  • Personal statement which includes reasons for seeking funding
  • A completion of writing plan in collaboration with their supervisor detailing the individual steps of writing for the 6 months period of the Scholarship
  • Letter of recommendation from their research supervisor
  • Copy of APR
