About Nihon University

The Nihon Institution is a private research university located in Japan. The minister of justice, Yamada Akiyoshi, founded Nihon Law School, which is currently known as the Department of Law, in 1889. This university is private and represents Japan. The word “Nihon,” which means “Japan” in Japanese, is the source of the institution’s name. Nihon University currently has, according to the university website, “16 colleges and 87 departments, 20 postgraduate schools, 1 junior college with 5 departments, 1 correspondence division, 32 research institutions, and 3 hospitals.” With over 70,000 students, this is the largest student body in Japan.

Laws change as society changes. In some cases, laws change in response to the demands of society, and in other cases, society changes in response to changes in the law.

Studying law is an opportunity to develop an interest in the society behind the law, such as political science and economics, business, journalism, media, public policy, and culture. Why was this law (rule or regulation) created, and what was the background to its enactment? To explore these questions, we must not only draw on our expertise but also engage with interdisciplinary knowledge and learn from a variety of disciplines. This is because the law is created by and reflects the very society in which people live.
