Types Of Aid

There are many forms of financial aid from loans to work study to grants to scholarships. Each type of aid has its own characteristics. You will find it helpful to learn the differences in the categories of types of aid.

Awards for Scholarships

Generally, scholarships rely on merit, although additional criteria may apply. The university, the state of Michigan, and private organizations award scholarships. While completing the FAFSA is the primary step in obtaining financial aid, it is not a scholarship application. It is important to remember that increasing numbers of private organizations require the submission of FAFSA material.

Typically, need-based gift aid takes the form of grants awarded upon completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at

Loans are a form of aid that will require repayment. Federal student loans allow students to borrow at special fixed interest rates and with flexible repayment plans. Students must complete the FAFSA and be an eligible student to qualify for federal student loans. While there are private or alternative loans are available, it is important to think about federal student loans first.

Additional Programs

Additional Michigan Programs provide funding for targeted and eligible student populations (like foster youth). These programs normally require the completion of the FAFSA.

Work-Study provides students with an opportunity to work on campus or at approved non-profit organizations off campus. While students can earn wages that they can use to meet educational expenses, work-study should not be confused with a grant. Students must complete the FAFSA and demonstrate financial need for the amount of their work-study award.

Veterans Benefits

Veterans Benefits are eligible for benefits for higher education expenses because of their service to the country through the Office of Veterans Affairs. Eligibility is certified by the Office of the Registrar. The University of Michigan-Dearborn also participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program for Chapter 33 students who are classified as non-residents for tuition assessment. Information for additional resources can be found at the Veterans Services-Veterans Success Center.
