May Term

Have you ever wanted to spend an entire month understanding the actual chemistry of cooking? Are you researching the sacrificial rites of ancient Rome? Exploring the wonders of Spain and Italy?

During the May Term, you will have the opportunity to take a deep dive into one particular area of study that interests you or get a global perspective by travelling to another country. May-term courses are specially designed to broaden your horizons, deepen your knowledge, and ignite your passion for learning.

“It was great having the opportunity to finish a semester-long course in a more concentrated timeframe. May Term is a great opportunity to not only stay on track to graduate or get ahead, but to dedicate full focus to a single course rather than managing multiple at a time.”

Summer Term

Illinois Wesleyan is excited to continue offering summer courses for current IWU students, high school students, students from other institutions, alumni, and community members! It is possible to take one course in June and one in July; however, due to the condensed nature of the courses, we strongly recommend against attempting two courses in the same session.

General Education and Gateways

At Illinois Wesleyan, our strong general education program is all about exploring new ideas, perspectives, and areas of study. These courses provide opportunities for students to ask questions, think critically, and learn about the world in fun and engaging ways. With a mix of classroom learning and hands-on experiences, students will develop important skills like critical thinking, creativity, and empathy for others.

Gateway courses are small, discussion-oriented classes for first-year students, designed to develop students’ skills in writing in college and public discourse. Although each course investigates its issue or question, all focus on writing as a major component of intellectual inquiry. Gateway courses seek to:

  • introduce students to the process of intellectual inquiry and develop students’ critical thinking skills
  • develop abilities to evaluate competing ideas and experiences
  • develop skills in the conventions and structures of presenting knowledge in written academic and public discourse, and on strategies for effective revision
  • engage students in learning activities that prepare them for academic life in the university
